The article above is stating that the Voodoo religion is misunderstood by the media and it's a significant religion in West Africa and Haiti. It talks about how Voodoo was brought to America and how that effected the American culture. The author restates several times that Voodoo and Catholicism are linked and that a majority of Haitians are Catholic. The article also goes over the history of Voodoo in Haiti.
Voodoo's relationship to the modern world was more recognized in 2010 when a horrendous earthquake hit Haiti (country of majority of Voodoo followers). This resulted in more people wanting to know about the country's history and main religion-Voodoo. The United Nations considered this to be the "largest urban disaster in modern history" because more than 1.5 million people were left without shelter and more than 222,500 deaths. The Voodoo religion has kept their traditions as same as possible instead of changing it to fit modern beliefs. Today, Voodoo has different forms. In West Africa they practice the original form of Voodoo. Haitian Voodoo and New Orleans Voodoo are a little different from West African Voodoo because they believe in one main god-Bondye and they worship deities because they believe god in unreachable.
